Everyday connections
Color and talk about community helpers
A familiar face in a picture can be a gentle starting point for a conversation. Let your child describe what they notice before you add your own ideas.
What you’ll need
- The free Community Helpers sample
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Optional paper for another drawing
Look before coloring
Ask what they can see in the picture. The bag, table, and heart sign are useful details to notice together.
Talk about helping
Ask, “Who helps us when we need something?” You can mention a doctor, a teacher, a firefighter, or someone your child knows.
Give the helper a story
Imagine the doctor getting ready to help a patient. Keep the story simple and avoid guessing how a real medical visit will feel.
Draw another helping person
On a separate sheet, invite your child to draw someone they appreciate. The drawing can be a few marks, a face, or an entire scene.
Bring it back to their world
At another time, point out a helper you actually meet. A short “That is someone who helps our community” connects the picture to a real person without needing a quiz.
