Playful Halloween
A Halloween color-and-tell afternoon
This cheerful costume scene makes a simple starting point for a story. There is no need to finish every space before the storytelling begins.
What you’ll need
- The free Halloween sample
- A few crayons
- A comfortable spot to sit together
Choose the costume colors
Ask whether the pumpkin costume will be orange, purple, or something completely different. Let the answer belong to your child.
Name the character
Try “Who is this?” and “Where are they going?” If they are unsure, offer two playful choices and let them pick.
Tell one small adventure
Use the pumpkin and moon in the picture as story clues. Perhaps the character is taking a pumpkin to a party or looking for a friendly cat.
Save their story
Write a sentence they say on the back, along with the date. Leave room for the story to change the next time you look at it.
A quieter version
If storytelling does not appeal today, simply color side by side. You can name the colors or enjoy a few quiet minutes without turning the page into a lesson.
